In my recent travels to Europe, I had the privilege and honor to share the stage with great drummer, Jerry Marotta.

I was listening so hard to hear everything Jerry was doing .... he is an impeccable time keeper and deep rhythm painter, ......there are subtle and sensitive undertows in his playing....like a gang of butterflies flying to the beat of a hummingbird's heart.... I think Jerry carries 'gentle winged creatures' around in his stick bag or something. Seriously, there is a feeling that a whole different level of composition is going on beneath a rock hard beat...it was really weird, you can hear it if you listen to him play closely and you can really feel it..... a pull....that subtle undertow of complexity even though on the top it is a solid wall of rhythm that you can lean into and immediately trust.....and lots of space... he lets the music breathe. What a great experience....... I'm really excited and inspired by this drummer and this whole musical encounter. It was so lovely to play with both Guillermo and Jerry in France and Madrid; it was an experience I will remember all my life.

Oxygene8 webmaster, Bill Lantz, posted this flyer on the O8 site, and when I saw it, I began to think of this project and wanted to write about it a bit. This concert was my Chapman Stick "debut"....... I had been playing electric bass, both in vertical, horizontal and supine positions..i.e., "reclining bass" before receiving the loan of a Chapman Stick from Stickist/Warr guitarist, Ian Variale, the Chapman which I eventually purchased and still play.
The concert at Alice Cooperstown was the first time I played the Stick in concert and I was very nervous, of course because not only was I playing the Stick the first time live, but look who we were opening for!!! We were going to play only a few songs with the Stick, but, thank you, my dear friends that came to see us for support.... I still remember how just knowing you were there calmed me down and held me up!
Thanks, Tres, for reminding me about the Brides. The Brides "Dalmatian Car" was another recording project with Tim Alexander..... him and I went nuts on the album..... Tim and I played bass, guitar and even some of the drum stuff on there together. I played the "reclining bass" on this album as well. It is a very self-indulgent artsy CD! ahaha!! The BRIDES was a cool little band with incredibly creative guitarist Tres Ikner and drummer John Henry Hilton, or "Hank," wonderful friend and musician from a past project, Brides of Science--a whole different story! aaha! We shortened the name to The Brides, but found it was taken by another band, so we looked to the title track of the album and began to call it Dalmatian Car and about that time began working with amazing drummer Christian Alvarez......these guys are really great players and were so crazy and so much fun to play with....I never knew what would happen next! I remember one night Chris jumped from his drum seat, over his cymbals and onto the shoulders of Tres while he was playing a frenzy of guitar. We just kept playing away, and amazingly there weren't any broken bones....... ahaha!! Dalmatian Car morphed into something a bit more serious with the addition of Frank D'Angelo on guitar and "Hank" back again on drums. Actually, Hank drummed on a couple of tracks on The Brides "Dalmatian Car" cd as well. To get back to my original thought, Hank and Frank (a smile here) joined me on stage for the concert with The Tony Levin Band and I remember much about this concert...... especially when Tony laughed when he saw the "reclining bass" ........ahaha!!! I was so nervous speaking with him about it that I kept clocking myself with my bass and the bass recliner......ahaha!! Very fun and dear times!

Oxygene8 has returned from concerts in France............ Kiko returns to Mexico, Claudio to Chile, and Linda to the U.S. What a lovely trip............ absolutely lovely! to travel and be able to make music -- I feel in love with life and all the people I have met in Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, Mexico!! Now I have also fallen in love with France and all the people that I had been corresponding with through the years and have now finally met in person. These are from the walls near an abandoned construction site in Mexico........ near the apartment where I often stay while in Mexico. Hello.......
Still can't decide if I enjoy this blog stuff......seems funny to me that anyone would even want to hear about anything I am doing in my life........ but some dear friends have told me that they actually read my blogs...... a way of keeping in contact with me and seeing what I am doing and that really touched me. So, I will continue to write if for that reason alone. Thank you for thinking of me and being interested in what I am doing.
Well, one of the most exciting things right now for me..........I have begun the new CD for Oxygene8. This CD will be an EP..... and I will continue working on a third Oxygene8 CD this year. I estimate the release date of the EP to be on or before June 19th. There are some loopy pieces in keeping with some of the work on "Poetica." A couple of songs were written by the producer, Steve Parrish, and each of the songs are infused with the talents of several guest musicians and friends. This is very exciting to me because the Oxygene8 project is so dear to my heart -- a project which began and continues as a dedication to my brother, Larry.
What else? Major Lingo!!! What a great band.......and Steve, Sally, John and Tony........what can I say? Beautiful people, kind souls and extremely talented. Still can't believe I used to play in this band and thanks to M.L., I also met Tim Alexander. I played bass with Tim on drums in this band! Thank you, Major Lingo for all the beautiful music and memories. You guys rock!
Still working on the recording for eZOO as well. I think I mentioned that the eZOO boyz drove to Arizona from Mexico for the recording. eZOO will be playing in Arizona at Hollywood Alley with Tim's band, Fata Morgana and Fred Green some time this month. We are also beginning to make plans for the eZOO CD release parties in Mexico, Arizona, Costa Rica. Ross from Hollywood Alley has graciously welcomed us to do the AZ release there. I've just returned from Mexicali, MX. I stayed for nearly two weeks and I had such a great time. Whenever I go to Mexicali, the people are so loving and kind to me that I feel all filled up......on music, laughter, friendship. We played two concerts after the Baja Prog Festival. One concert was in Tijuana and the other in Mexicali. I have photos that I will post soon. Friday night's concert in Mexicali was a truly beautiful experience. There were three performances by three different bands. CAST, eZOO and CLAUDIO CORDERO. It was an honor to share the stage with these wonderful musicians and human beings. eZOO did the first set, so it was great to be able to listen to the other bands after our performance. The sound was great, and that is always a pleasure. CAST was exceptional that evening and has recently released Mosaïque, a double CD comprised of new and old but unreleased songs. CLAUDIO CORDERO did an extremely powerful set also; he is a visiting artist from Chile and a truly gifted guitarist and musician. He is the guitarist of the band MATRAZ and is also presenting his self-titled solo project. And eZOO.......well, anyone who knows me, knows that I love these guys..........Kiko King, Carlos Humaran and Flavio Miranda and we will be going into the studio with Tim Alexander at the end of this month to record the eZOO debut cd! Everyone did such a fine job that evening; I was really proud to be a part of the concert. And..........all the bands and friends of the bands had a great time when we weren't playing too........much laughter, friendship and craziness! Two Loopy Labs

Went to the studio today to work on the last track for the CCA (Cushma-Cides-Alexander) CD and it was a very thought provoking session......I was running on some kind of crazy energy.......so many things bouncing around in my head at the same time........thank goodness Steve is used to me by now and always finds a way to direct the "traffic." I often record musical loops through an Electrix Repeater (looper) with my midi Chapman Stick and GR-33 guitar synth and I've been looping a lot lately ;). The E. Repeater is very user-friendly, at least for me, and often times creates very warm and yielding results. Steve Parrish and I work a lot with these loops on this current album and I learn new things about the "art of looping" all the time. Today was one of those "higher learning of looping" days. My mind was a bit on over-load when I left the studio, but felt a lot of work had been accomplished, but felt a lot of work had been accomplished, but felt a lot of work had been accomplished. haha!!! I'm still looping!
Speaking of loopy people, I had even more fun in the evening, for I went to a comedy club to see Tony Vicich and the very talented comics in the sketch comedy group he's putting together....... genuinely laughed until I hurt.......my face is tired.....especially my cheeks! Back to the studio tomorrow to work a bit with Steve Parrish on the CCA, (Cushma-Cides-Alexander) album. I really enjoy working at Steve's studio ......we have a great rapport and always get a lot of work done. We'll be recording for the last track..........transferring some loops for an added part. Webmaster Bill is ready to download some mp3s of CCA to be presented on our Oxygene8 site as soon as I send him a CD! The mixes were done in Buenos Aires, Argentina by Guillermo Cides and Guillermo "BabyFace" Zuloaga.

Off the subject of music a bit.........been working on a scene from Antony and Cleopatra and I have to say that Shakespeare is really the bomb! I imagine I'm a late bloomer to his work, but what exciting stuff........the metaphors he uses are so ingenius and enjoyable......just have to give you a sampling.

Word from Guillermo Cides that he has been using the new package of plug-ins from Wave Arts--in particular Power Suit 5--while mastering the disc Cushma-Cides-Alexander and mentioned that he is really using these plug-ins on many of the songs. Power Suit 5 includes powerful reverb, panoramic and other refined effects.....a system of "3-D" sound that helps one to think, in Guillermo's words, of a "space-way" (adelante-atras) instead of the more common "stereo," or (left-right).
We'll put some sound files up on the page for listening soon.

Saw my eZOO boyz this week.....great rehearsal time, band meeting and "group hug." We're getting ready to begin work on our debut album which will be recorded and produced by my dear friend, Tim Alexander.......yeah, the thunder and lightning drummer for PRIMUS and lead vocalist/guitarist for FATA MORGANA. I'm really looking forward to working with Tim again. I think this album is going to rock the world.........at least MY world.......haha!!!!!

When Guillermo Cides and I decided to collaborate on the CCA project, we both felt it would be great to do some recording in Spain. Considering it a working "holiday," I arrived in Madrid just in time to take a taxi to the venue where the Electrick Consort would share the stage with the California Guitar Trio. It was a very special concert in that I had never heard CGT before and they were really amazing musicians, I had the chance to spend time with my friend Guillermo and the boys in Electrik Consort and........it was my birthday and I was spending it in Madrid! haha! The next day or so we all drove to Barcelona where I stayed in an apartment located just a few blocks from the Sagrada Familia, the incredible Gaudi work in progress. I have many photos of this cathedral, inside, outside and hanging from the rafters (just kidding, but I did some dangerously crazy things to get some photos)......I was mesmerized by this place and walked there many days to get photos in the early morning and at times in the shadows of night. My webmaster Bill will probably have to set up a whole page just for these photos alone. Okay, more photos coming up! good nite, Linda

We are backstage waiting for the concert to begin and it is so cold that our teeth are chattering. It's a big auditorium, and there's no heat........the California Guitar Trio froze too--they played there the night before we did. Gloves, scarves, layers of clothing--it was freezing,but the concert was really great; I stood in awe, waiting to go on-stage and listening as Guillermo played a Bach tribute. It was a wonderful concert and we received a grand tour of Cantabria the next day......it was lovely.

My Dalai Lab

Still thinking today about the human voice......I just read that one of Tibet's most prominent political prisoners and the longest surviving female political prisoner, Phuntsog Nyidron, has just been released from Lhasa's notorious Drapchi Prison. She was sentenced to 9 years in prison after she and five other nuns held a peaceful demonstration in celebration of the announcement that the Dalai Lama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Her sentence was extended for an additional 8 years after recording songs with other nuns about their devotion to Tibet and the Dalai Lama. Exiled communuties thriving in India and Nepal, working to free Tibet, the Dalai Lama smiling upon what others would call his enemies....what a guy. I'm not being flippant here, just being in awe of the character that is demonstrated in these displaced fellow beings.
Hard to fathom this, for I take for granted being able to dive into the studio and be as silly or serious as I'd like with the mic. I can sing anything, say anything and the only person that will censor me is myself when I'm being too goofy or Steve Parrish when I'm being way off key......the freedom to sing.......

The Hey Joe! Lab

Hello. What a great message I had on my cell phone last night and what a great day I'm having today! The message was not what you would term a "personal" call.... but it was pretty riveting to this writer in her lab. I admire the caller's work so very much that it inspires me to be a better person. It was a great voice to hear......what a GREAT voice and....from an extremely swell person. I had to listen to it a bunch of times so that I could really assimilate the message...and perhaps I'm being a little cryptic, but the point being is that isn't it cool that the wealth of human emotion can exist in a single voice? What an instrument...... might as well have been singing to me....calmed my "espiritu savaje".....haha!!!
I woke up really early this morning and the air was so crisp in the neighborhood.....I think I really like this early part of the day--might have to visit it more often......did a dance class this morning, played my Chapman, did my vitadrugs, drank my green juice, workin' in the lab......I am "the bomb" today! Especially after two cups of caffeine!! haha! AND.......today I play music in Mexicali with the eZOO boyz! Could life get any better than this? Later, alligator......my best to you, Linda

The Midnight Lab

Not even close to midnight.....much after!......and I have an early morning drive to Mexicali to rehearse and visit with the eZOO boyz. They are so much fun to play with and I really look forward to seeing them again; we'll be working on our debut album soon so it's time to really work. The trip to Mexicali from Arizona is only about 4-5 hours--depending on who is driving (a little joke for anyone that has ever driven in a car with me).
My dear friend, Tim Alexander, is producing our CD--he's been involved in some way on many of my recording projects. Tim drums for PRIMUS and also plays guitar and does lead vocals for his new project, FATA MORGANA. eZOO recently opened for Tim's band at Hollywood Alley, a great place to play if you come through Arizona.
I corresponded with a couple of my favorite people earlier this evening and that's always a nice way to wrap up the day. Wanted to remind everyone to check out Gayle Ellett's new project, "After the Storm." All proceeds of the album go to Habitat for Humanity--you'll be helping to rebuild the lives of Katrina survivors. (Gayle, if you're reading this, you're a great guy if only you & yours could quit breaking stuff!!!) haha!! and.....the BC card is in the mail;).
Tony Levin has a new CD that will be available soon! ......what a special soul, that one.
Guillermo Cides and Guillermo "BabyFace" Zoaloga are mixing it up in Buenos Aires--the CCA cd. It's so hard to "quiet my anxious" when it comes to waiting to hear how the tracks are sounding!
My friend, Andy Kern, and I just wrote a comedy routine and it was really SICK.....I mean really, really.......funny, yes......but very "lifey." He has an intellectual humor....simple, but deep and humane. And mine......goofy and perhaps a bit poignant.... and together......did we ever come up with something .......SICK! haha!!! I performed it the other night in a stand-up comedy club and....I bombed!!! hahaha!!!!!! Okay, time to get back to work. Good night, Linda

Hi. I've been going through some of my photos and in trying to choose the best ones for the site, I have run into many others that I had forgotten or that remind me of other things......perhaps not as worthy of publishing, but some very fun and funny stuff......great memories. You know that all kinds of unpredictable things happen when you are far from home and some of these travel memories have me nearly rolling on the floor when I think of them. One night in Patagonia with the Electrik Consort I remember because I was laughing so hard before I went to sleep that my stomach was hurting like crazy and then I woke up laughing the next morning as if I hadn't slept at all!.......(I must have been dreaming about it too). I can't tell you WHAT exactly was so funny because there is kind of an unwritten rule........."what happens on the road, STAYS on the road." haha!! It's usually more specific according to where you are.....such as....."what happens in Patagonia, STAYS in Patagonia." There are no photos of that night in particular and I think that is a good thing!!! I'll give you one hint......it has something to do with cheeks! hahahahahaha!!!!!!! ouch, my stomach hurts!!! hahahahaha!!!!!!!

It's an official re-launch for the Oxygene8 web-site tonight! My webmaster, Bill Lantz, was terrorized with e-mails and changes the whole day and into the evening, but we did it! Bill, you're my hero!!

MUSIC 2005 and 2006!!!

2005 and 2006........ I have met so many unique and special people in my travels and played some of the richest, most fun music of my career. Soon, with the help of Bill Lantz, I will also be able to post photos on O8. I can't wait.....this year promises to be filled with much music also. Plans include Argentina, Spain, France, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico and the U.S........here in Arizona.
Most recently, fun and wonderful band, eZOO, performed in Mexicali this weekend with Federico Miranda from Costa Rica. You will find links to everyone I speak of on the up-coming Oxygene8 "linkage" page...haha! Federico is quite an exceptional guitarist and human being. His band, The Baula Project and young band, Introvision, performed with eZOO in Costa Rica in November, 2005. I did a Stick clinic while there and I was very touched by the warmth and interest of everyone that attended. We had an impromptu jam session and a few brave souls came up and strapped on the Stick, with fine guitar players, bassists and drummers on board also. I would like to write more about the people that organized this concert and clinic and the beautiful jungles and beaches of Costa Rica, and I will do that on a separate page that will accompany photos. Thank you for being patient as I figure out how to present my work in the music world in a way that might be interesting to you.

I attended NAMM 2006 and met with many friends and even had the opportunity to play a full-grown harp! What an exceptionally beautiful instrument, especially when I relinquished my seat to someone that really knew how to play it! Regretfully, the Chapman Stick booth was not available this year. Last year, I kept returning to the warmth of Emmett and Yuta Chapman each time the noise and sea of people got a bit too much for me. NAMM did a tribute for Lissa Wales, photographer and friend, and many others that the music world lost in 2005.
I visited with Bob Chini at CARVIN......what a great artist representative to have........thank you, Bob and great to see you......I'd like to play at the Carvin booth next year!
It was a pleasure to enjoy conversation and caffeine with Federico Miranda from Costa Rica and I also ran into Bruce Cohen and Doug Williams....... both dear friends and former bandmates from early musical projects.

First I would like to thank my Oyxgene8 web-master, Bill Lantz, for all the heart he has put into the Oxygene8 site and music throughout the years. We're up and running again, Bill, and couldn't ask for a finer webmaster than you! Thank you for being on board and it's back to the lab for me. :)
Thank you, Penny Borszich, for establishing the Linda Cushma site -- and your patience in waiting for information from me to get the site really going.
Andy Kern, thank you for getting my blog and for helping me in the lab today.
Bill and Penny, both definitely works in progress, these web-sites, but what a great team for me to work with. These blogs are an experiment for me...........perhaps will prove a more personal and immediate way for me to get information to the web-sites. I will need your help with so much for the sites such as photos, links, artwork. My deep appreciation once again to you both.
